The Story
The Merrill Estate at 1874 South County Road in Barnstable (Marstons Mills) is a one-and-a-half-story, five-bay Georgian Cape cottage with a massive center chimney, built about 1750-1775. In the mid-19th century a one-and-a-half-story Greek Revival wing was added to the front, and a two-bay English-style barn stands behind the house, testifying to its early agricultural use. The property is significant for its associations with Barnstable's early agricultural history and later summer-resort history, and it has remained in the Merrill family since Ann E. Merrill of Melrose bought it in 1889.
