The Story
The Stearns Building at 289-299 Bridge Street in downtown Springfield is a six-story steel-and-concrete office building erected in 1912 and designed by the engineering and architectural firm Samuel M. Green & Co. It is an early example of Gothic Revival (Neo-Gothic) ornament adapted to a modern office tower, with restrained lower stories and an exuberant cornice line of lancet-arched reliefs, tracery corner parapets and small turrets. Built with ground-floor stores and upper-floor offices during the rapid expansion of Springfield's downtown, it is the city's best example of early-20th-century Neo-Gothic office design and meets Criteria A and C.
