The Story
The Bicycle Club Building at 264-270 Worthington Street in Springfield is a four-story Romanesque Revival brick structure built in 1891 as the first permanent home of the internationally known Springfield Bicycle Club. Organized in 1881, the club was a pioneer in competitive bicycle racing and established the popularity of the bicycle meet, with its top rider George M. Hendee, a national amateur champion who later founded the Hendee Manufacturing Company that produced the Indian Motorcycle. The richly detailed building originally housed a bowling alley, a bicycle dealer, club parlors and offices, billiard rooms, and a fully equipped gymnasium.
