Smith's Building

Smith's Building at 201-207 Worthington Street in Springfield is a five-story brick commercial structure built in 1897 for the wholesale and warehouse firm G. McIntosh & Co., a good local example of late 19th-century commercial architecture combining Panel Brick and Romanesque Revival elements. It has a second-floor mezzanine divided into bays by rusticated piers, upper floors divided by piers carrying segmental arches, a corbeled cornice, and a pierced parapet, with storefronts framed by cast-iron piers retaining early leaded transoms. The McIntosh Company, one of the region's oldest and largest shoe-jobbing houses, occupied the block first; in 1914 Fred Smith moved his billiard parlor and bowling alleys here, and the upper floors became the center of candlepin bowling in Western Massachusetts before World War II. Significant for its association with Springfield industry and as a major recreational complex, it meets Criteria A and C.
