Worthy Hotel

The Worthy Hotel at 1571 Main Street in Springfield is an eight-story Renaissance Revival building designed by the prominent Springfield firm of Gardner, Pyne and Gardner. It was built in 1895 as a six-story, eighty-room hotel on the site of an earlier hotel destroyed by fire, then enlarged twice: raised to eight stories in 1905, and in 1909 joined with the adjacent six-story Mayo Building to bring its capacity to about 200 rooms. Faced in buff and yellow brick with extensive terra cotta trim, the building was the first steel-frame fireproof building constructed in Springfield, its steel skeleton adopted after the devastating fire that destroyed its predecessor. Built by hotelier Justin Worthy and made famous under his son Frank Worthy, it was the pre-eminent hotel in Springfield during the first half of the 20th century, meeting Criteria A and C.
