The Story
The Stacy Building is a four-story brick industrial block in the Panel Brick style, built in 1893 and designed by prominent local architect F.R. Richmond for Edwin S. Stacy, a Springfield machinery and mill-supply manufacturer. Massive brick piers rise to a patterned cornice, dividing the facade into single window bays with segmental-arched openings. The upper floors were leased to small manufacturers; notably, J. Frank Duryea tested an early automobile on the top floor in 1894, the car that went on to win the first American automobile race, held in Chicago in 1895.
