Springfield Steam Power - Taylor Street Block

Springfield · Hampden County

The places that make Massachusetts, Massachusetts.

The Story

The Springfield Steam Power Company Block at 51-59 Taylor Street in Springfield is a three-story brick industrial building in the Panel Brick style, retaining segmental-arched windows with 10-over-10 sash and a patterned brick cornice. The Springfield Steam Power Company was organized in 1881 by the directors of the Wason Car Manufacturing Company to supply steam power to manufacturers occupying blocks erected by the Wason Company, in what was reported as the largest single real estate deal in Springfield history. Work began immediately on this block, whose first occupant was the Springfield Sewing Machine Company; later tenants included J.B. Chapman and Co. brass founders and John Swaine Co. ironworks. It meets National Register Criteria A and C as an example of a leased industrial block associated with a major nineteenth-century power company.
