Lovell, Capt. George House

The Captain George Lovell House at 8 East Bay Road in Osterville (Barnstable) is a Federal-period house built in 1826, later given a full Colonial Revival remodeling around 1920 that added a monumental pedimented portico and facade balustrade. The symmetrical, five-bay, double-pile house rises two stories to a steep hip roof with paired end chimneys. Its original owner, Captain George Lovell, was a War of 1812 veteran imprisoned at Dartmoor who was credited with carrying enslaved people to freedom during the Civil War and who helped organize the Osterville Baptist Church. It later belonged to Peter F. Connally, builder of New York City's Sixth Avenue Subway, who was likely responsible for the Colonial Revival remodeling.
