Crosby, Daniel House

The Daniel Crosby House at 18 Bay Street in the Osterville village of Barnstable is a traditional half Cape cottage in the late Georgian/Federal style, built c. 1790. It rises 1 1/2 stories to a gable roof and has a three-bay facade with a side entry and chimney, simply framed entry, and windows with projecting frames and 6/6 sash. It was the home of Daniel Crosby (1765-1828), a merchant and the ancestor of all the Osterville Crosbys, including the noted boatbuilders; the house is conveniently located near the access to North and West Bays where most boatbuilding took place. Later owners included the Reverend Edward Bourne Hinckley, a Methodist minister and the village's first librarian, and the house served as the home of the village historical society before its move in the early 1960s. It is a fine unaltered example of a Federal-period half Cape, listed under National Register Criterion C.
