Robbins, Joseph House

The Joseph Robbins House is a full five-bay Cape with a center entry and chimney under a gable roof, built about 1820-1830 in the Osterville village center of Barnstable. Its multi-pane entry transom reflects the Federal style, while the relatively high roof anticipates the later Greek Revival taste. It was the home of Joseph Robbins (1807-1888), a skilled house painter noted for his fine wood-graining (examples of which survive on doors in the house) and for having painted a figurehead for the U.S.S. Constitution; it later belonged to coastal master Capt. Joseph Adams. Moved in 1938 to Bay Street near its original site, it is a rare survivor of the village's Federal-period character.
