The Story
The Josiah A. Ames House at 145 Bridge Street in the Osterville section of Barnstable is a vernacular Queen Anne seaside cottage built in 1887. Built on a square plan with an intersecting gabled roofline, shingle walls, irregular fenestration, and narrow segmental-arched windows in the gables, it is a well-preserved example of late-19th-century seaside architecture. It was built by Josiah A. Ames (1827-1900), a Civil War veteran of the 40th Infantry, upon his return from the western gold rush. From 1902 to 1922 the house served as a lodge for the Lincoln House Association of Boston, a 'fresh air' group whose members stayed at the cottage for two-week summer visits.
