The Springfield Fire and Marine Insurance Company Building at 195 State Street in Springfield is a Classical Revival limestone office building erected in 1905 to house one of the city's leading insurance firms. A prominent corner structure, its nine-bay, three-story facade rises from a rusticated first story to upper floors whose recessed window bays are framed by two-story columns, capped by a modillioned cornice and classical parapet. The company, founded in 1849 by Springfield resident Marvin Chapin on the principle of keeping insurance local, survived heavy losses in the Chicago Fire of 1871 and the Great Boston Fire of 1872 before growing rapidly into the 20th century, and it occupied the building until 1966. It is significant under Criteria A and C as a reflection of the city's early-20th-century prosperity and as a major local example of the Classical Revival style.
