The George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum on Springfield's Quadrangle is the oldest of the city's cluster of museums, housed in an Italian palazzo-style building that dates from 1895 and was designed by the New York firm Renwick, Aspinwall & Renwick with Springfield native Walter Tallant Owen. It was built to hold the extensive collection of George Walter Vincent Smith, a businessman who retired young and spent decades gathering art, especially Japanese arms and armor, Chinese cloisonné, and Asian decorative works, which he and his wife Belle bequeathed to the city. The museum retains Tiffany windows made specifically for it, and the Smiths' ashes are interred within the building.
