A contributing property in the Quadrangle--Mattoon Historic District (Boundary Increase), listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2000. This well-preserved residential neighborhood near the U.S. Armory in Springfield developed between about 1850 and 1930 during the city's industrial peak. Initially home to Armory workers and contractors, it evolved from a district of single- and two-family houses into one of substantial apartment blocks designed by local architects and builders. It is significant for its architecture, for its reflection of urban residential growth, and for its associations with Springfield's African-American and French-Canadian communities, including a house tied to Underground Railroad activism.

History
The George Walter Vincent Smith Art Museum in Springfield, opened in 1895, houses the eclectic collection assembled by Gilded Age collector George Walter Vincent Smith and his wife Belle in an Italian palazzo-style building. Smith was especially devoted to the arts of East Asia, and the museum holds one of the largest collections of Chinese cloisonné outside Asia along with extensive Japanese arms, armor, lacquer, and religious sculpture. Among its Asian holdings are Japanese Buddhist and Shinto works that reflect Smith's fascination with the region's craftsmanship.
