History

Springfield built this State Street school in 1897-98 on ground formerly occupied by the county jail, to designs by the Boston firm of Hartwell, Richardson and Driver, and for its first decades it was known simply as Central High School. A junior high wing went up at the west end in 1922-23, and the Classical High School name was adopted in 1934. Classical merged with Technical High School to form Springfield Central High in 1986; the State Street building was afterward converted into condominiums.
