Radding - Winthrop Building

The Radding Building at 143-147 State Street in Springfield is a Classical Revival office tower built in 1915, designed by Boston architect Charles R. Greco and constructed at a cost of $250,000 for local contractor and real-estate developer Edward Radding. The tall narrow brick facade is six bays wide and eight stories high, with a two-story base articulated by Classical pilasters and an entablature, string courses at the third and eighth stories, and a modillioned cornice and parapet; the same detailing continues along the 20-bay Willow Street facade. Built for speculative offices, it replaced an older tenement and included stores, offices, assembly halls, and clubrooms, and was one of the largest and most prominent blocks on State Street during the 1920s. It later became known as the Mutual Fire Assurance Company Building after that firm (founded 1827) took offices there as a prime tenant in 1943. It meets National Register Criteria A and C as a representative of the southward commercial expansion of downtown Springfield and a good local example of a Classical Revival office tower.
