Bangs Block

The Bangs Block at 1119 Main Street in Springfield is a four-story, four-bay brick commercial building constructed about 1870 in the Late Italianate style, its architect unknown. Its facade features segmental-arched windows with corbelled brick hoods and a decorative corbelled brick cornice, and it is a well-documented example of the small-scale commercial blocks that once lined the southern end of Main Street. It was built by the Bangs family to house the Bangs Market, a grocery run first by John Bangs and later by his son Adam Bangs until 1903, before housing a watchmaker and other commercial tenants.
