Burbach Block

The Burbach Block at 1113-1115 Main Street in Springfield is a three-story, five-bay brick commercial building in the Panel Brick style, built in 1882 by Gerard Burbach, proprietor of the adjacent United States Hotel from the 1870s until 1894, on a site previously owned by flour dealer H.W. Pearl. Decorative brick coursing, window hoods, and corner merlons typify the smaller late-19th-century commercial blocks that once dominated the southern end of Main Street, serving the expanding South End residential neighborhood. The Burbach family managed the adjacent German-run United States Hotel (built in the early 1850s, demolished in 1915) during its most prosperous years, while the Burbach Block itself outlasted the hotel and housed a succession of 20th-century commercial tenants including a dry goods store, saloon, restaurant, and furniture store; it was rehabilitated as offices following a fire in 1981.
