This stone stands at the Springfield Armory, the United States' first national armory, established at Springfield in 1777 during the Revolution on the recommendation of General Henry Knox. The site on the bluff above the Connecticut River was chosen for its safety from naval attack, and it served first as an arsenal before beginning to manufacture muskets from scratch in 1794. For nearly two centuries the armory was a leading center of American firearms design and production, developing weapons such as the Springfield rifle, until it closed in 1968 and became a National Historic Site.
