History

The Main Arsenal is the landmark centerpiece building of the Springfield Armory, the U.S. Armory and Arsenal at Springfield that manufactured military firearms from 1777 until 1968. Built in 1847, its distinctive clock tower held racks of finished muskets that inspired Henry Wadsworth Longfellow's 1843 anti-war poem "The Arsenal at Springfield," which likened the stored arms to a "huge organ." Extensively renovated between 1987 and 1991, the Main Arsenal now houses the Springfield Armory Museum and its Benton Small Arms Collection, one of the world's largest collections of historic American firearms, within the Springfield Armory National Historic Site.
