This service building belongs to the Commanding Officer's compound at the Springfield Armory, built in the same years the plant tooled up for the greatest production run in its history — the M1 Garand, adopted by the Army in 1936 with manufacture starting the next year and eventually totaling more than 4.5 million rifles. The Armory closed in 1968 and the core grounds passed to the National Park Service; the Main Arsenal and the Commanding Officer's Quarters were extensively restored between 1987 and 1991.
