History

Known formally as Quarters 1, this house was raised in the mid-1840s under Major James Wolfe Ripley to replace a superintendent's residence condemned in 1843. Its cost - contemporaries put it as high as $72,000 - scandalized Washington, and critics dubbed it 'Ripley's Palace.' Thirty-four superintendents and commandants of the Springfield Armory lived here between its completion and the arsenal's closure in 1968. Congress folded the Commanding Officer's Quarters and the 1840s Main Arsenal into Springfield Armory National Historic Site in 1974; the house is preserved by the National Park Service but is not open to visitors.
