This marker relates to the founding of the Springfield Armory, the United States' first national armory. George Washington and Henry Knox selected the Springfield site as a military storage depot in 1777, and in 1794 Congress authorized it to manufacture small arms for the nation. Over nearly two centuries the armory pioneered mass-production techniques such as interchangeable parts and produced the muskets and rifles used in America's wars until it closed in 1968; it is now a National Historic Site.
