Smith Carriage Company (SPR.135)

The Smith Carriage Company District on Park Street in downtown Springfield comprises three densely built industrial buildings constructed for the Smith Carriage Company during successive periods of expansion between about 1880 and 1924. The earliest is a late-19th-century three-story brick building with segmental-arched windows and a corbeled cornice, joined by two 1920s steel-and-concrete buildings of four stories faced in brick with terra-cotta-trimmed facades. The Smith Carriage Company was founded on Park Street in 1827 by David Smith, a former carriage-building apprentice, and was later run by his son William H. Smith; it specialized in light frame carriages and is credited with supplying an early frame (a second-hand buggy frame) to the Stevens-Duryea automobile company. As the auto industry grew, the firm shifted to auto body parts before closing in the 1940s.
