State Armory

The State Armory at 29 Howard Street in Springfield was built in 1895 to the designs of Boston architects Robert Wait and Amos Cutting, with local firm Gardner, Pyne and Gardner supervising. The bold granite head house, with brick and brownstone trim, features crenellated parapets and towers rising up to sixty feet, and is attached to a large brick drill shed; the building was enlarged by fifty percent in depth in 1914-15. It was Springfield's first building erected for the local volunteer militia, sent its first soldiers off during the 1898 Cuban campaign, and also served as the city's largest venue for social functions and expositions.
