The Story
The Milton Bradley Company complex on Park, Cross, and Willow Streets in Springfield is a collection of Panel Brick industrial buildings erected between 1880 and about 1912 for the rapidly expanding game and toy manufacturer. Milton Bradley & Company was founded in Springfield in 1860 as a lithography business by Milton Bradley and grew into one of the city's largest manufacturers, incorporated in 1884 with lithographic, games-and-toys, and educational departments and becoming nationally prominent. The complex is significant for its association with industrial development in Springfield and as a well-detailed grouping of late-19th-century mill buildings, later adapted for housing (Criteria A and C).

Milton Bradley began printing games in Springfield in the 1860s and moved his firm onto this block in 1882, onto land belonging to George Tapley, a boyhood friend and partner in the Taylor and Tapley Manufacturing Company. Building by brick building the works spread until the company owned the whole block bounded by Park, Willow and Cross Streets, wrapped around a central courtyard, with a lithographic print shop on site for the game boards and boxes. Manufacturing left for East Longmeadow in the late 1960s; the complex was converted to housing in the late 1970s and listed on the National Register in 1983.
