Patton Building

The Patton Building at 15-19 Hampden Street in Springfield is a brick commercial block dating to about 1872, given an ornate vernacular Georgian Revival facade in 1909 designed by local architect B.H. Seabury. The 1909 facade, virtually untouched from its original appearance, features horizontal massing with two-story projecting bays, geometric-patterned wood spandrels flanking three center bays, a modillioned cornice, and original storefronts with leaded-glass transoms and a central cast-iron entrance canopy (one of only three surviving on downtown buildings). The building was an integral part of the late-19th-century development of the North Blocks area, is associated with prominent local developer William Patton and his son, and its renovation from a wholesale warehouse to first-class offices and retail shops reflects the downtown's early-20th-century growth. For over 30 years it housed the leading western Massachusetts civil engineering firm of Durkee, White and Towne, which directed major trolley, water, and sewer projects and designed Camp Devens during World War I. It meets National Register criteria A, B, and C.
