The Story
The Carlton House Block at 9-13 Hampden Street in Springfield is a three-story brick commercial row building constructed in 1874-75. It displays Italianate features such as stilted arches, stone window hoods, and 2/2 sash, and was updated in the early 20th century with a cast-stone parapet and large plate-glass storefronts. Built by William Patton and named for the earlier Carlton House hotel on the site, it was erected for lease to the wholesale boot and shoe jobbers Cutler, McIntosh & Co., and is significant for its role in the development of downtown Springfield as a commercial and industrial center (Criteria A and C).
