It is distinguished by a weighty Doric frieze and a range of two-story Doric columns in antis on its Lyman Street facade, though its Main Street facade was later covered with modern panels. The Chapin National Bank was organized in 1872 as the Chapin Banking and Trust Company, a banking adjunct of the financial interests of Chester W. Chapin, and became a national bank in 1878. It is significant under Criteria A and C for its associations with the development of local banking and with Chester Chapin, a major local entrepreneur and railroad magnate who became president of the Western and then the Boston & Albany Railroads; it was listed as part of the Downtown Springfield Multiple Resource Area.
