The Story
The Patton and Loomis Block is a downtown Springfield commercial block erected in 1864 to the design of leading local architect J. M. Currier for developer William Patton, a dealer in "Yankee notions," and cigar manufacturer C. L. Loomis. In 1909 real estate developer Frank L. Dunlap spent about $15,000 to reface it in an early-20th-century Commercial style, and the surviving juxtaposition of the 1909 stucco facade with the original 1864 brickwork survives on the side elevation. It is significant for its association with two prominent Springfield real estate developers and with the downtown's two major commercial boom periods.
