The Hampden County Courthouse on Elm Street in Springfield was designed by Henry Hobson Richardson and built in 1871-1874 of locally quarried Monson granite, an early example of his developing Romanesque style and the county's second courthouse. After a fire it was extensively remodeled in 1906 by Richardson's successor firm Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, which removed the sloping roof and dormers; the building was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.

Constructed of rough-faced Monson granite, it is an early example of the Romanesque Revival manner that Richardson would make famous, with heavy rounded arches and a battlemented parapet. After a fire, the building was substantially remodeled in 1906 by Richardson's successor firm, Shepley, Rutan and Coolidge, which replaced the original hipped roof. It is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
