First Church Congregational

The First Church of Christ, Congregational at 50 Elm Street in Springfield is the fourth meetinghouse of the First Parish, built in 1819 by Isaac Damon overlooking Court Square. Its design is a country builder's interpretation of the transition between the late Federal and early Greek Revival styles, with a giant Doric portico and a tower rising through the portico roof into a three-stage spire, and a gallery inside supported by Ionic columns. It is the earliest extant church by Damon and sets the pattern of church design he followed throughout his career; the First Parish, organized in 1637, is thought to be the oldest continuing body of worship in Western Massachusetts.
