History

The bronze statue of Miles Morgan in Springfield's Court Square honors an early settler of the town and a defender of its fortified blockhouse during King Philip's War. Morgan (1616-1699), an English immigrant who reached New England in 1636, held out in his fortified house after Springfield was burned in 1675 until relief arrived from Hadley. Completed in 1882 as an early work of sculptor Jonathan Scott Hartley, the statue was erected by Morgan's descendants and depicts him in frontier dress with a musket.
