Walker Building

The Walker Building at 1228-1244 Main Street in Springfield is a Richardsonian Romanesque commercial block built in 1890 at a cost of $75,000, designed by the Worcester firm of Fuller and Delano. Faced in Springfield brick with highly ornamental freestone trim, it was designed to house four street-level shops and offices on the upper floors (its top floor has since been removed). It was built for T.M. Walker (1815-1904), a leading local manufacturer and dealer in woodwork, paint, and builder's supplies, on the site of the old Exchange Hotel; such merchant-built commercial blocks were central to the intensive development of downtown Springfield around the turn of the century.
