United Electric Company Building

The United Electric Company Building at 73 State Street in Springfield is a fine example of Beaux Arts Classicism, built in 1910 and designed by Boston architect Thomas M. James, who was noted for his bank designs. The bold limestone facade is three bays wide with two-story Ionic pilasters set between slightly recessed bays, round-headed upper-floor window openings with ornate spandrel panels, a projecting iron entrance canopy, a prominent frieze and modillioned cornice, and a clock set in Classical framing above; a compatible three-story rear addition was designed by Kirkham & Parlett in 1927. It was built to house the offices of the United Electric Company, chartered in 1887, which played a major role in providing electricity to Springfield and its region from the 1880s onward until its 1942 consolidation into the Western Massachusetts Electric Company. An outstanding local example of early-20th-century classical revivalism, it was listed as part of the Downtown Springfield Multiple Resource Area.
