The Aptucxet Trading Post Museum in Bourne stands at the site where, in 1627, colonists from Plymouth Colony built a trading post on the Manamet River to trade with the Wampanoag people and the Dutch of New Netherland, making it one of the earliest such posts in New England. The stone foundation, excavated in the 1920s, is considered among the oldest remains of a Pilgrim building, and a replica post was raised over it. The open-air museum, run by the Bourne Historical Society and established in 1930, also includes a replica saltworks, a relocated 19th-century railroad station, and a windmill.
