History

This flagpole stands on the grounds of the Aptucxet Trading Post Museum in Bourne, which preserves the site of one of the earliest English trading posts in America. In 1627 colonists from Plymouth Colony built a trading house on the Manomet (Manamet) River to exchange goods with the Wampanoag and with Dutch traders from New Netherland, using it as a way station for wampum. The original post fell out of use by the mid-17th century, and the museum, featuring a reconstruction of the trading house, was established in 1930.
