History

The Aptucxet Trading Post Museum in Bourne commemorates a trading post established in 1627 by colonists from Plymouth Colony, considered the colony's first outpost of its kind on Cape Cod. The original post was built to trade with the Wampanoag and with Dutch colonists from New Netherland, exchanging goods such as wampum, corn, and furs, and it fell out of use by the mid-1600s. In 1930 a replica building was erected on the original stone foundations uncovered by archaeological excavation, and it operates today as a museum.
