The places that make Massachusetts, Massachusetts.

The Story

Built in 1848 atop Great Hill, Union Hall (later Truro Town Hall) is a two-and-a-half-story Greek Revival building in the meetinghouse style, with a gable-front facade, corner pilasters, wide entablature, and a distinctive three-stage tower topped by a shingled octagonal cap and cock weathervane. A group of Truro businessmen bought the hilltop land and sold shares to raise money for the building as a community center for fraternal societies such as the Odd Fellows and Sons of Temperance. When those groups folded, the town rented and then purchased the building beginning in 1867, using it for town meetings, a library, dances, lectures, and even shoe, hat, and shirt manufacturing during the fishing industry's decline. Highly visible from land and sea, the tower long served as a beacon for sailors and, alongside the 1827 Congregational Church, remains a defining landmark of this Cape Cod town.
