The Story

The Cove Burying Ground, just south of Route 6 in Eastham, is the town's oldest cemetery, dating to about 1646 and laid out soon after Eastham's first meeting house was built nearby. It served as the town's only burying ground until the Bridge Road Cemetery opened in 1720. Three original Mayflower passengers of 1620 have marked headstones here: Giles Hopkins, Lt. Joseph Rogers, and Constance Hopkins; it was added to the National Register in 1999.

History

The Cove Burying Ground is Eastham's oldest cemetery, laid out about 1646 near the town's first meeting house, and it served as Eastham's only burying ground until Bridge Road Cemetery opened around 1720. It is individually listed on the National Register of Historic Places (1999) and holds the graves of three Mayflower passengers: Lt. Joseph Rogers, Constance Hopkins, and Giles Hopkins. Its oldest surviving stones, carved between 1706 and 1712, are among the earliest on the Lower Cape.
