The Story
The Captain Edward Penniman House in Eastham is a lavish two-and-a-half-story Second Empire whaling captain's home built in 1867, with a mansard roof, octagonal cupola, and an ornamental wooden fence and whale-jawbone gateway in the front yard. Captain Edward Penniman, a New Bedford whaling master, built it after retiring to his native Cape Cod, and it was long known as the 'finest house in Eastham.' It is the only whaling captain's house in Eastham and stands within the boundaries of the Cape Cod National Seashore.
