Penniman, Capt. Edward House

The Captain Edward Penniman House, on Fort Hill Road in Eastham within Cape Cod National Seashore, is a two-and-a-half story frame house built in 1867 in the Second Empire French style, with a mansard roof, octagonal cupola, and richly detailed cornice, dormers, and a Corinthian-columned entrance porch. Known historically as the 'finest house in Eastham,' it was built by whaling captain Edward Penniman, who operated out of New Bedford and made whaling voyages to southern and Arctic waters, sometimes accompanied by his wife Betsey. The house is significant as the only whaling captain's house in Eastham and the only one within the National Seashore boundaries; a barn built about 1800 stands to the rear.
