The Story
The barn stands just southeast of the Captain Edward Penniman House in Eastham, part of the Second Empire whaling captain's estate built in 1867 on Fort Hill. The three-story barn has a mansard roof matching the house, and wooden brackets left over from the house's construction were reused in its woodshed; a section of the second floor extends over a slope to shelter a carriage and stalls for a horse and cow. The property was the home of Captain Edward Penniman (1831-1913), a prominent Cape Cod whaling captain, and is the only whaling captain's home in Eastham and the only one within Cape Cod National Seashore.
