Bourne High School

The Story

The former Bourne High School at 85 Cotuit Road is an excellent local example of the Colonial Revival style, built in 1905 to the design of the Boston firm Parker and Thomas. The two-story red-brick building consists of a hipped-roof main block with a symmetrical seven-bay facade and central cross-gabled entrance pavilion, joined by a connector to a side-gabled gymnasium wing added in 1934 (when fire damage to the main block was also repaired). Significant under Criterion A for its association with the early development of Bourne's public education system, it was the town's first separate public high school and one of the first Cape Cod schools to reflect the trend toward school consolidation. It later served as a junior high school until 1991 and has housed the Waldorf School of Cape Cod since 1992; interior features include original staircases, built-in cabinetry, a second-floor greenhouse, and commemorative plaques.
