Beacon, The

The Beacon is a wood-frame, shingled, cylindrical two-story lighthouse tower built in 1892 at Nauset in Eastham, now standing off Cable Road with the two other towers that together made up the Three Sisters of Nauset. The 1892 trio of portable wooden towers replaced an 1838 set of three brick towers that had been threatened by the shifting Nauset bluffs, and the wooden towers were deliberately designed to be movable. The Beacon is significant as a component of the only example of a triple light in Massachusetts, an early technological effort to distinguish geographically close lights, and it later carried all three signals through a revolving mechanism. Now inactive and lacking its lantern house, it is part of the Cape Cod National Seashore, where the National Park Service planned to restore the three towers in their approximate original configuration.
