The well and well house stand on the grounds of the Aptucxet Trading Post Museum in Bourne, an open-air museum centered on a replica of the 17th-century trading post the Plymouth Pilgrims built at Aptucxet in 1627 to trade with the Wampanoag and Dutch colonists. The original post, the colonists' first permanent Cape Cod settlement, was abandoned by the 1650s, and the Bourne Historical Society acquired the land in 1922, reconstructing the trading post on its original excavated foundations in 1930. The museum grounds, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021, gather a collection of period structures beside the Cape Cod Canal, which now follows nearly the same route colonists once used to reach the post.
