The Story

The Aptucxet Trading Post Museum is a small open-air museum in Bourne on the banks of the Cape Cod Canal, centered on a 1930 replica of the trading post built in 1627 by Plymouth Colony to trade with the Wampanoag and Dutch, the first trading post the Plymouth colonists established and their first permanent foothold on Cape Cod. The replica was reconstructed atop the original stone foundations following excavations conducted from 1926 to 1929 by Percival Hall Lombard and Nathan Bourne Hartford, and the 12-acre complex, run by the Bourne Historical Society, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021.

History

The Aptucxet Trading Post Museum in Bourne centers on a replica of the 17th-century trading post that Plymouth Colony established at Aptucxet in 1627 to trade with the Wampanoag and the Dutch, often described as the first commercial trading operation in North America. The museum building, a reconstruction, was erected in 1930 on the original site and is owned and operated by the Bourne Historical Society. Today it anchors a multi-acre complex of historical buildings and replicas beside the Cape Cod Canal.
