History

This marker commemorates the Aptucxet Trading Post, established in 1627 by colonists of Plymouth Colony on the Manomet River in what is now Bourne. It was the Pilgrims' first permanent outpost on Cape Cod and served as a center for trade with the Wampanoag people and with Dutch colonists from New Netherland, its Algonquian name meaning roughly 'little trap in the river.' A replica of the trading post was built on the site in 1930 and is operated as a museum by the Bourne Historical Society; the property was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021.
