History

This site is part of the grounds of the Aptucxet Trading Post Museum in Bourne, an open-air historical museum on the banks of the Cape Cod Canal. Its centerpiece is a replica of the trading post that Plymouth Colony Pilgrims established at Aptucxet in 1627 to trade with the Wampanoag and with the Dutch of New Amsterdam, the colonists' first permanent settlement on Cape Cod. After the original post was abandoned by the 1650s, the Bourne Historical Society acquired the land in 1922 and, following archaeological excavations, built the current replica on the original foundations in 1930. The wider museum property, listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2021, also includes a memorial wildflower garden and other historic structures.
