The Aptucxet Trading Post Museum in Bourne stands on the site where Plymouth Colony established a trading post in 1627, considered one of the earliest such posts in North America. Located where the Manomet and Scusset rivers met, it allowed the Pilgrims to trade with the Wampanoag and with Dutch traders from New Netherland. The post's foundation was excavated in the 1920s, and a replica trading house was built over it; the surrounding museum campus, run by the Bourne Historical Society, also includes a saltworks replica, a windmill, and the Gray Gables railroad station.
